Angela Ngiam

Angela is a compassionate and caring counsellor who enjoys supporting people to re-connect to themselves through exploring their true identities, restore internal parts that have been neglected or felt lost through trauma, and guide them to learn to relate to others in a way that promotes healthy relationships and resolves conflicts.

She has experience in individual and group trauma counselling and have worked with clients from a variety of backgrounds, spirituality, and worldviews, supporting them in their journey of healing from trauma.  Angela is from Brazil, married to a Singaporean, and has 2 children. As a migrant, she has experience in cultural transitions, cross cultural relationships, cultural stress, and adapting processes. She understands the many complexities of miscommunication between a couple, and draws from each individual's emotions to facilitate healing in relationships. She speaks both English and Portuguese fluently.

She has started her work career with a Bachelor Degree in Economics, then later moving to doing what she loves, connecting more deeply with people, after finishing her Theology Diploma, and her Graduate Diploma in Counselling. She is registered with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). She has completed her training in Emotionally Focused Therapy with Dr Rowan Burckhardt and Clare Rosoman.

Angela developed a program to support the mental health of refugees and asylum seekers affected by trauma, and has worked with that program for a number of years before coming to Sydney Couples Counselling Centre.

She is able to incorporate a variety of interventions in her style of counselling, using an integrated approach, with a client-centred focus, being led by her clients in what may work best for each of them. The backbone of her style is the concept of attachment, and she cares for clients in the framework of a trauma-informed-care. To that, she adds knowledge and experience in using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Strengths, Solution Focused Therapy, and Body/Sensory Awareness Psychotherapy.
